Last week I ordered a copy of Tamara Lackey’s “The Art of Children’s Portrait Photography” and received it two days later. Amazon is good like that. I’ve spent the last 12 months laser focused on wedding related photography (<a href="http://www.dajuanjones.com/category/weddings/engagements"target="_blank"title="" >engagement sessions, <a href="http://www.dajuanjones.com/category/weddings/bridals"target="_blank"title="" >bridal sessions, <a href="http://www.dajuanjones.com/category/weddings/wedding-photography"target="_blank"title="" >wedding photography, and <a href="http://www.dajuanjones.com/category/weddings/day-after-session"target="_blank"title="" >day after sessions), so you might ask what my interest is in children’s portraiture. Well, I’ve always had the interest in children’s portrait photography, but I wanted to see what I could do if I focused in one area for a bit.

So what caused this inactive interest to surface? Maybe something reminded me of the awesome presentation Tamara gave during WPPI earlier this year, or it could be the upcoming birth of my 3rd child (yeah!), but children’s photography is peaking my interest of late and Tamara’s book really hit the spot. Why? Well, for one she is a very accomplished children’s photographer. Her experience and success give her credibility. I suspect it’s that same experience that led her to place attention in her book on areas which are really important, yet may not be intuitive or overlooked by some photographers. Too often aspiring photographers want to know about camera gear, exposure settings, lighting diagrams, etc. But relating to your clients is one of the strongest skill sets one can have in photography, and Tamara spends time helping her readers with this. It’s this area that I found so enlightening. Honestly, I can apply some of what she shared with my own children even when I don’t have a camera around! She addresses a number of other areas too, such as work flow, business management and planning. She even talked about gear (duh). And yes, the book has a great number of inspiring images. I’d say this text should be required reading for any up and coming children’s photographer.

If you’re looking for children’s photographer and you’re local to the Raleigh area you are in for a treat. Tamara’s studio is in Durham, across from The Streets at South Point. Why would I share that with you? Because her work is awesome!

I’m a BIG fan of Jasmine Star, and based on her recommendation I picked up a copy of Dane Sanders’ book, Fast Track Photographer. Jasmine was spot on, this text is revolutionary! Hmm, I don’t want to overstate it, but Dane breaks the mold from which many wedding photographers mindset has been cast. His advice and approach is liberating and challenging. It’s just what achieving or aspiring photographers should hear in this “everyone with a dSLR is now a photographer” world. I blame Ashton Kutcher, but I digress.

This is not a book review, but rather 1) an update of what I’ve been reading regarding photography, and 2) a recommendation to aspiring and current professional photographers alike. You will not be disappointed.

I’ll make it easy for you, get your copy here!
