Day After Sessions

Day After Sessions

A day after session is a portrait session that takes place after the wedding day.  Today’s brides & grooms want more than the traditional formal portrait session taken at the alter of the church directly after their ceremony.  That is not to say that those formal portrait sessions are a thing of the past, quite the contrary.  But modern brides & groom also want portraits of themselves that showcase the love between them.  For many couples, the question is not whether they want the more intimate portraits, but where in their wedding day itinerary can they schedule it.

There are several reasons for choosing to have a day after session:

  • You may choose a day after session if you won’t have enough time during your wedding day to have more intimate portraits done.
    • Weddings often bring family & friends together to celebrate the union of love ones.  They want to celebrate with you, and you likewise want to spend time with them.  Remove the stress of keeping up with a stringent schedule on the day of your wedding by arranging a day after session.
    • Sometimes the scheduling of venues cramps the time you have between ceremony and reception.  During my many years experience with wedding photography, I’ve seen my share of rushed post ceremony portrait sessions.  While you’ll want to do your best to capture those family portraits within the window of time your planner has identified, you’ll also want more time with just you and husband / wife, just the two of you, in love.  This is a no brainer for a day after session.
  • You may choose a day after session if you’ve selected a destination wedding and would like to take advantage of the local scenery.  This is popular among destination weddings, and for good reason.

When to plan your Day After Session

Although the name would lead you to believe that the portrait session would take place the day after the wedding, day after sessions also take place after the honeymoon.  It isn’t so much as when you take your post ceremony portraits, but rather to make certain that you do have portraits of the two of your together.

Attire for your Day After Session

Attire: Often my couples will wear their formals (tux & gown) during their day after session.  I think that is great, but isn’t required.  It’s true that if you aren’t wearing your formals, then it isn’t obvious that the portraits are of your wedding.  But this decision is a matter of choice.  It’s your love and your session.  You let me know how you’d like to document it!
